The Mourne Wall
The Mountains of Mourne - Northern Ireland
The Mourne Mountains are an area of outstanding natural beauty situated in County Down, Northern Ireland - 31 miles South of Belfast and 62 miles North of Dublin.
We offer this as a one or two day challenge to follow the route of the Mourne Wall and visit 15 mountain summits in the Mourne range.
The Mourne Wall stretches for a distance of 22 miles over 15 of the mountains in the Mourne range. It was built between 1904 and 1922 by the Belfast water commissioners to enclose the water catchment area of the Mourne Mountains. It was a huge undertaking, taking 18 years to complete and being constructed of local granite. The wall's about 1.5 metres in height and just under a metre in width and passes over all but one of the15 mountain summits.
Slieve Donard at 853 metres is the highest peak in the Mourne Mountains and the 19th highest in the island of Ireland. It's crowned by a small tower, built as a shelter. Rather oddly, the OS trig. column has been built on top of the tower!
